The Defining Moment

It would be a lot to say as a photographer that one image was a defining moment after-all our abilities and skills improve and evolve over time but I can confess one image did help me see new light as a photographer.

One of the most foundational and important compositional tools for photographers and artists is no doubt the "Rule of Thirds" and it's remarkable strength is reflected in “Heading out this Morning (into the sun)”

Certainly the boat in the bottom left of the image was planned however the soaring bird in the top right third was a fortunate addition further strengthening the composition.

But while the composition is strong this photograph taught me because of the beauty and adventure at hand it was possible to extend photography beyond reality, beyond magic and onto imagination.

Thank you for stopping by!

  1. The rule of thirds is naturally ingrained in my brain. I apply it to my art, my gardening even my home decorating... now it is a challenge for me to apply it to my new found hobby, photography. This is such a magical example where skill and chance worked together for a surprising outcome. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and images with us Brian.

  2. Yes Sharon when I see an image I like I will look at it considering the rule of thirds and it amazes me how often it applies with art and photography.
