Chasing Orion

Orion is one of my favorite constellations to photograph. Among the things I love about it is that it's very distinctive and identifiable. It's wonderful to read about this constellation and how people have seen it throughout the ages, it is a legend of the night sky.

Chasing Orion at Cape Spear Newfoundland

Here in Newfoundland Orion rises above the eastern horizon in late December and is visible until late June when it sets in the west. My favorite place to photograph it is Cape Spear Newfoundland, the most easterly point in Canada. I also have the good fortune of seeing it when I walk out my front door at night if the sky is clear.

Under the Moonlight at Cape Spear Newfoundland

Often you will find what draws your eye to this constellation is Orion’s belt or the dog star Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. You can find Sirius by drawing a line through and extending it from Orion’s belt. If you can find either the other is hard to miss.

We have less than three months before Orion is once again gone from our night sky, why not get out and have a look. Happy viewing and if you have any questions please feel free to post them here I'll try my best to answer them. Thank you for stopping by!

Farewell Fort Amherst

What is one of Newfoundland's most recognizable landmarks is falling apart. Fort Amherst is up there with Cabot Tower as one of our iconic locations, it's a place of unique beauty and character. There is no other place like it in the world.

Fort Amherst is situated at the entrance to St John's harbour, on the southern side of "The Narrows". The original fortifications were built in the 1770s and are no longer visible. The present fort was built in the 1940's to defend against German U-Boats.  The site was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1951.

Sadly in several years it may be gone, in 20 for sure. Unfortunately while St John's is being transformed into “another” small North American city our uniqueness crumbles, all because of neglect! If you have a personal connection with Fort Amherst you might want to visit the site, pause and reflect and perhaps say goodbye!

Let the Music Play

An update for a post earlier this week about one of the buskers who plays downtown on Water St in St John's Newfoundland, who had his guitar stolen. Thanks to a great response on Facebook we were able to get him a replacement.

Thank You to Terry Norman for replacing the Captain's stolen guitar. You will find "The Captain" busking in downtown St John's again this year. :-)

The Day the Music Died

I was downtown today and once again bumped into this gentleman. I had taken this photo of him last summer when he was busking on Water St in downtown St John’s Newfoundland. I asked him where his guitar was, mentioning his lovely blue guitar and he told me it had been stolen.

The Day the Music Died

I was wondering if anyone might know where this guitar is? I’d be happy to return it to him, no questions asked. Or if you might have a guitar you no longer use and wouldn’t mind parting with it I I’d be happy to see he got it. Busking is an important part of the vibrance and colour of downtown, please support it!.
