Farewell Fort Amherst

What is one of Newfoundland's most recognizable landmarks is falling apart. Fort Amherst is up there with Cabot Tower as one of our iconic locations, it's a place of unique beauty and character. There is no other place like it in the world.

Fort Amherst is situated at the entrance to St John's harbour, on the southern side of "The Narrows". The original fortifications were built in the 1770s and are no longer visible. The present fort was built in the 1940's to defend against German U-Boats.  The site was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1951.

Sadly in several years it may be gone, in 20 for sure. Unfortunately while St John's is being transformed into “another” small North American city our uniqueness crumbles, all because of neglect! If you have a personal connection with Fort Amherst you might want to visit the site, pause and reflect and perhaps say goodbye!
