Summer Cultural Festival

I've had the good fortune of meeting so many great people throughout my life, many over the last few years. Just this past weekend I had the pleasure of being a part of the Summer Cultural Festival held at Victoria Park in downtown St John's Newfoundland. One of the things I love about festivals is that you get to meet a lot of new people who want to get together and enjoy life, to live life to it's fullest!

Summer Cultural Festival, a fundraiser for the  Refugee and Immigration Advisory Council, consisted of performances by musicians, dancers, stand-up comedians and also included various workshops. Many thanks to the Refugee and Immigration Advisory Council, the volunteers and sponsors for putting of this wonderful event!

Now, a few photos................

The Jailway

St John's has a new walking trail it's called the "The Jailway". Actually it's not new it's a part of the Grand Concourse Trail running throughout the city. "The Jailway" gets it's name from the new fence the city and port authority decided to erect along Harbour Drive in downtown St John's Newfoundland.

We call it "The Jailway" because it offers the view one would expect from inside a prison cell.

The fence is about 8 foot or 2 1/2 meters tall and is designed to keep out terrorists and to keep residents safe from the perils of dockside activity. Both hazards are clearly evident in the photo below. :-)

Bidgoods Park

There is this little park not far from my home. It's a great place to go for a walk: one of my favorite pastimes, and a fabulous place to photograph: my window on the world.

This time of year (early August) the grass stands tall, in places more than two meters from it's base. When the sun sets the warm light set the grass aglow, It's a show I look forward to each year.

It's also a good place to go photograph the night sky. While light pollution is a problem, especially with St John's to the north, in other directions the sky is surprisingly clear.

Bidgoods Park is located in Goulds, in the south end of St John's Newfoundland. Click on this link to see the location on Google Maps. This Google imagery (at this time) is about 4 years old and the area has been fixed up considerably with parking available in a lot of the Backline.
