The Evolution of Creativity

Following is an excerpt you can find in my ebook entitled "The Beginner's Guide to Photographic Excellence". You can find the ebook at:

The Evolution of Creativity
Introduction

Photography is as much a craft as it is an art. While camera's have become remarkable instruments with improved capabilities and features, learning how to use your equipment is vital to being a creative photographer and your ticket to making great images.  No matter how great the technology, learning basic camera skills are what you need to have control over how your images look and it's also where so much creativity lies!

Cabot Tower Drive

“Cabot Tower Drive” is a photo of my home town of St John's, Newfoundland, Canada which I made in October 2010. I had taken this composition originally on medium format film back in 1991 and at that time I went with a 2 minute exposure, there were several cars in that image. I was happy with what I got back then and became excited about the possibilities of long exposure and light trail photography.

About 5 years ago while out for a walk it struck me “what if I could get only one car in the photo”? It would be a great  idea to clean up the light trails.  I knew it wouldn't be easy and I decided to pursue it as a creative and technical challenge.

It took considerable patience because I couldn't control the traffic on the hill. I had to set the ISO and the aperture to give me the exposure time I estimated. I opened the shutter just before the car entered the frame at the bottom of the hill and closed it when the driver applied their brakes at the top alongside Cabot Tower. In this case I used bulb mode and locked the shutter open for 73 seconds. Finally, after two evenings of trying, a second car didn't enter the frame and I got my photo.

When I look back on it I think I was lucky to get the image as “easy” as I did because of the frequent traffic in the area. But you know what they say about luck, the harder you work the more you have of it.

Check out my ebook for more. It has detailed information on what you need to be a creative photographer and some examples to get you started.

Thank You!

Carbonear Hospital Commission

This morning I delivered the work for my latest commission, this one for Carbonear Hospital. The work was commissioned by Dr Christopher Patey and Dr Daneile O'Dea, local husband and wife physicians. The commission was for 6 framed prints featuring single edition, one of a kind landscape photographs of the Carbonear area. They will be displayed in the trauma rooms at the Carbonear Hospital.

The commission was for single edition prints and through preliminary meetings we discussed and agreed on the overall concept of the collection. After a specified period of time (this commission duration was about 6 months) I present the client with a series of photographs from which they pick the images to be printed and framed. The number of images presented, framing, size, as well as other details, was decided during preliminary meetings and correspondence. The cost is based on the size and number of prints.

Below we have Dr Chris Patey holding the print, "Morning at Salmon Cove Sands". One of six images in the collection.

Back to My Roots

I often refer to myself as a landscape photographer even though the work I do is expanding into many different areas. These days I'm doing a lot of portraiture both professionally and in a number of personal photography projects I have on the go. Though I might be doing less than I used to I find landscape photography even more appealing than I have in the past. A precious longing persists!

If the reward is a good hike and getting some of that gorgeous Newfoundland air into my lungs I'll gladly accept the payment.

Landscape photography is more than about the images. I like being out, turning into the wind closing my eyes, inviting the breeze to caress my face. Experiencing a personal relationship with Mother Nature. There is also a sense of freedom attached to the experience. It certainly is a lovely feeling, the present is the only moment and you can appreciate being connected to all this beauty.

Close Encounters of the First Kind

Newfoundland has many experiences waiting for people who love nature and the great outdoors. Whales are a major attraction in Newfoundland during the summer months and one of the greatest experiences you can have would be to dive with the magnificent humpback whales.

I recently joined Ocean Quest, setting out from Petty Harbour to take some photos of people reveling in this magnificent experience!

While the whales were the main drawing card enjoying the beautiful rugged coastline added just the right topping to the adventure!
