Mummers Festival at St John's Newfoundland

I took the time out to photograph the Mummers Parade yesterday (December 19, 2015) in St John's Newfoundland. The reason I love this event is because people take the time out for the sole purpose of having fun. In a world were we are constantly confronted with a superficial wall of negativity and fear being able to return to the one basic tenet of the wonder of life, taking the time to do nothing but have a little fun is a special time!

Below are some of my favorite photos. Please feel free to share!

Being Given the Moment

Breaking free from the mountainous demands of life.
Freeing yourself from the boredom of the mundane.
Being different because it brings the freshness of a new experience.
Experiencing the sensation of nature as she caresses your face.
Being given the moment.

Danica and Matt

For the last several years my motto has been "Creativity, Innovation and Photographic Excellence" and I mean it. I work hard at what I do, use some of the best equipment out there and have decades of photography experience.

Every image I take is important to me! Just think how I would feel if that photo was the best I'd ever taken, I would be more than delighted! When it comes to wedding photography, lets reach for the stars. To say it another way, if you look good I look good. It's win win for both of us.

While having a experienced photographer with professional equipment is important for great wedding photography the key lies in our ability to have fun. Certainly that's what I want you to do, have fun and enjoy your wonderful day and leave the photography up to me. It is your very special day and your chance to shine!

Thank you for stopping by.

Air Newfoundland

As a landscape photographer I am always looking for new angles from which to photograph.  After all composition, how your image is put together, in just as important as getting the right light and if you can get both your guaranteed some great images.

Aerial photography using drones is one way in which I can get unique compositions. The quality of an image coming out of smaller cameras these days is quite extraordinary and add to that the ability to attach larger cameras to these aircraft you can say "landscape photography has reached new heights"!

Cape Spear to Water Street

I don't think I will ever stop calling myself a landscape photographer, it's such a peaceful and connecting experience for me. And when I'm out it's great to be able to include more than one of Newfoundland's iconic locations into a single photo. Cape Spear, Signal Hill, Cabot Tower and downtown are some of the better known and popular areas. I never tire of them.

I'm always looking for unique perspectives and as you can see from the "Cape Spear to Water Street" photo's below I think I'm on the right track.

Salt of the Earth

I have been a big admirer of the work of Sebastião Salgado for several years now. I was drawn to him as a photographer but I admire him more as a human being, a man with genuine concern for others and the world around him.

After earning a master’s degree in economics from the University of São Paulo he began work as an economist for a development bank, travelling to much of Africa. In his 30's Salgado chose to abandon his career as an economist and pursue a new love, photography.

As a social photographer his projects took him to the four corners of the earth.  His recent work includes "Genesis" which documents the world's forgotten people and places. He has spent much of his life using his photography to shine a light on the fate of the outcast and now his story is being told in an upcoming documentary "Salt of the Earth".

I also very much enjoyed his TED Talk called "The Silent Drama of Photography". It is centered around how a valley in Brazil where he grew up as a child was de-forested and what they did about it.

His work is a reminder that while we, as a civilization, have so much more to accomplish the rewards of doing so can be very profound and the joy immense. Hope you enjoy and thank you for stopping by!

Photography, A Personal Journey

Just completed my third photography presentation, the latest was at the St John's Newfoundland Positive Thinkers Club it's called "Photography, A Personal Journey".

The presentation is about how the focus of my photography has changed and how I've changed over the last several years. Over that time I have photographed more than 800 people from all walks of life for my street photography project which is featured on my website Chasing The Light Fantastic. A substantial selection of those are from what you might call the fringes of society and it may surprise some people to hear what I have have to say about that experience. No matter if your surprised or not I think you will be inspired!

At times I will give people a copy of their portrait, I like to do it as a gesture of kindness and as a token of thanks! I should say often the photo ends up with their mother.

The presentation is loaded with "sweetness" you might say!

The Spirit Lifter's

Looking out for one another is not only one of the most virtuous things a person can do but there are also “benefits” for the person doing so. In addition you get to meet like minded, kind, considerate people who believe in the collective good, our good. It’s hard to find better company than that.

2015 Spin for Kids - Yoga Team

Back in 2013 I was at the Newfoundland and Labrador Special Olympics and I never saw so many smiles in my life. I don't think I ever seen so much pure happiness in one place. I understood then there is a lesson to be learned here.

2013 Newfoundland and Labrador Special Olympics Bowling

I remember talking to some of our volunteer's a couple of weeks after our first Help-Portrait here in St John's Newfoundland four years ago and they were still buzzing with excitement. No doubt that happiness and joy will eventually extend to their family and those around them. After all Happiness is contagious. We’re all winners here!

As the coordinator for Help-Portrait St John’s I do find it more work than the other events I tend to as a photographer, but having seen it grow over the last four years is a pleasure in itself. Plus I get to work with a most wonderful and kind group of volunteers.

To date we have held 8 Help-Portraits and have our 9th scheduled at Choices for Youth, March 29 2015.

Below is a photo of the Help-Portrait St John’s team at the Janeway Children’s Hospital December 2013. Missing from photo are Taryn Stone, Reagan Forsythe and Tracy Robbins.

……… oh and I don’t always sport pink hair!

Throughout human history people have learned that not only does it feel good to do something for others it is also in our benefit to do so. Aside from the feel good experience, people will often take the opportunity to return the favor should a occasion arise. If they do that's kind of like getting bonus points. :-)

Azzo Rezori at Blind Date with a Star 2012

In a world where mental health is a big issue I'm a believer that that warm fuzzy feeling that comes from even the most subtle act of kindness can be a form of medicine. It can have a profound effect on one's mental health and well-being.

2013 Children's Wish Foundation

Over the years I have participated in Help-Portrait, Spin-for-KidsNewfoundland and Labrador Special Olympics, Children's Wish Foundation, Blind Date with a Star, Easter Seals and other local charitable events and I've enjoyed every minute of it and will continue to do so. The buzz will never wear off!

You, Me and the Ugly Tree

I have to admit I'm a great lover of trees. I wouldn't call myself a treehugger, I do recognize their utilitarian benefits. Over the years I have learned just how important trees are in maintaining a healthy environment and sustaining peoples lives throughout the ages. Trees help provide and sustain life!

The Ugly Tree - Cosmic Journey

For me as a photographer it's exciting to find unique beauty and character in something so common as a tree. Even one so "unattractive" can reward an abundance of benefits!

Why Trees are Awesome?
  • They provide us air to breath
  • They clean the air
  • They provide food for people animals and insects
  • They prevent soil erosion
  • They prevent flooding
  • They beautify areas
  • They provide us with lumber to build houses as well as paper to make books
  • They prevent water pollution
  • They shield us from the wind
  • They provide play areas for our children
  • They combat the greenhouse effect
  • They increase property values
  • They play a vital part in the circle of life

There is so much beauty in trees. A beauty they freely share with us.
